Another peachy visit (despite a rough start) – Georgia 2016
For our first couple of years in Portland, PaJoe and Embo made the trip out here with Granddaddy and Bubbie. When the springtime visit came up again this year, though, the great grandparents (understandably) decided that the cross-country trip was just a bit too much for them. They still wanted to see us, and knew that finances were our main obstacle, so they decided that Embo’s 90th birthday gift to herself would be to fly our family to Georgia for a summer visit! Ella, Katie and I had been to Georgia in June 2013, just before we moved to Portland. Gary hadn’t been since back when we lived in Nashville, and Emily had never been before – so we were all definitely due for some lakeside fun. We gratefully accepted PaJoe & Embo’s offer, and started looking for the best timing for our visit.
We ended up booking plane tickets for July 21st through the 28th, which would allow Gary a few days between returning to Oregon and returning to work at Holy Trinity, and worked best for my Dad and Holly, who planned to meet us in Georgia.
While Gary and I have each traveled with our big girls, and I have flown with Emily, this was our first trip as a family of five. I was a bit nervous about the cross-country trip with all three girls – Ella and Katie hadn’t been on a trip that long since we moved here from the east coast 3 years ago, and Emily had never traveled that far. We put a lot of thought into what we packed for the trip and (perhaps more importantly) for the carry-on bags full of snacks and entertainment, and just crossed our fingers that all would go smoothly.
Here’s how Emily and Katie woke up on travel day:

and here’s Emily trying on her ‘puddle jumper’ life vest before I packed it in the suitcase:
I had taken a picture of this pile of stuff a few days before we left, because it just made me laugh…I had asked the big girls to help me pack their ‘airplane backpack,’ to be filled with lightweight, small, portable, quiet, good airplane toys for each of them. Katie selected an etch-a-sketch, two rubber ducks, a wind up toy, a selection of alphabots, a few pieces from a board game, and a photo album. Don’t worry, I helped her to refine her backpack contents just a bit ;)
Kristin was taking us to the airport in our car, so we picked her up on Thursday morning with our car packed to the max, leaving plenty of time before our 10:15am flight. We would have an hour long layover and plane change in Oakland, then the long flight to Atlanta, which would land at 8:30pm local time – just in time to rent our car, drive to my Aunt Anne & Uncle Clay’s house, and get the girls to bed close to their normal bedtime (when considered in pacific time, anyway).
Kristin dropped us off at the airport, we unloaded our three children, three car/booster seats, three suitcases, five carry-on bags, and umbrella stroller, gave our goodbye hugs, and headed inside to get in line.
Well, you know what they say about the best laid plans.
While I had confirmed that all of our travels were on time before we left the house, while in line I received an email from Southwest telling me that our flight from Oakland to Atlanta had been cancelled. Not delayed — cancelled. I had thoughts ranging from “this can’t be happening” to “obviously they’ll just put us on another flight” to “how am I going to call my Grandma and tell her we’re NOT COMING after months of looking forward to this visit??” I got really mad at the airline, I calmed myself down, I might have cried a little bit…and this emotional roller coaster was all taking place while Gary and I coaxed three squirmy girls (along with the stroller, suitcases, and carry-on bags) through the twisting, winding, snail’s pace line to the ticket counter.
So we got to the front of the line, and we could tell from the lady’s face as she clicked away on her computer that it wasn’t good news. There was no way to get us to Atlanta anytime soon (as in, not for several days). What about another airline? No, they don’t do that. So I started scrambling…what about other cities? Could you get us to another city nearby and we could rent our car from there and drive to Atlanta? I mentioned Nashville just because I happen to know that it’s about a 4 hour drive. Her face showed a glimmer of hope as she looked at her screen – “we could get you to Nashville tomorrow…the flight would land at 11:15pm.”
“So,” I clarified with barely suppressed rage, “you’re telling me that I have to call my sister-in-law who just got all the way back to Beaverton, tell her to turn around and come pick us up, have her bring us back here again tomorrow, travel all day with three small children, land close to midnight in a different city (different state!) than originally planned, then drive into the wee hours of the morning in order to reach our originally planned destination…two days later than we were supposed to?”
Poker face airline worker: “Yes. Oh but you’ll need to contact the rental car company to make sure that they’ll have the vehicle you need in Nashville, we can’t guarantee that.” “But I booked the rental car through your website, with the same itinerary as the flights.” “Doesn’t matter – we can’t guarantee it.”
I’m getting bored (and angry all over again!) re-living all of the details, so let’s just say that there was a supervisor that got involved to confirm the rental car availability (he gave me his personal cell phone number but then spent the rest of the day dodging my calls…he answered when Gary called from his phone), hours were spent on hold with airline customer service (literally 6+ hours) only to be told that I actually need to call customer relations, it’s a separate number, and no they can’t transfer me….it was just a really unpleasant day. BUT – it has to be said that the girls did really well, all things considered. Gary took them and all our stuff to a bench off to the side while I was ‘clarifying things’ with the people at the counter and waiting, waiting, waiting for some sort of resolution to our situation.
Good sport Kristin turned right around and came back to the airport once we knew for sure that we weren’t going to be able to fly out that day. As it turns out, she and GiGi had planned to meet Joe for lunch that day, so we just went with them since our schedule had opened up for the day. Here are the girls at lunch, laughing at videos of them riding their bikes:

It’s really odd to come home when you’ve expected to be going on vacation. We couldn’t unpack because we were leaving the following day, and we didn’t have many groceries in the house, so we just unpacked and repacked only what we needed (toothbrushes, contact lens cases, etc) and dug out a frozen pizza to make for dinner.
The following day, we met Kristin at the zoo, where she and GiGi had spent the morning with the kids, and she drove us to the airport. Many jokes about deja vu and “hope we don’t see you again today!” were made :) This time, we made it past security – yay! Here we are having a little lunch before our flight to Phoenix (our layover spot on the way to Nashville):

all smiles on the way to Phoenix:

walking to our gate in Phoenix:
aaaand, delayed again. Our Phoenix to Nashville flight was delayed three separate times, each one longer and more frustrating than the last. As we kept saying, it wouldn’t have been so bad if we’d known about the actual departure time to begin with – we could have eaten at a sit-down restaurant and set up camp at an empty gate to let the kids run around. As it was, we kept having 30 and 40 minute chunks of time to fill, never wanting to stray too far from the gate since we would be “boarding soon”…so we ended up with a frustrating dinner of scones and bad overpriced sandwiches from Starbucks, and sort of wandered aimlessly in search of open outlets to charge the iPads.
The girls did really well through all of this, though they were just being normal kids – unable to sit still, always in everybody else’s way, impatient, tired from traveling (with our longest flight still to come!). I kept texting our family back in Oregon and our waiting family in the southeast…we hadn’t yet decided whether we would drive straight to Tate from the Nashville airport or stop at my Dad & Holly’s house to get some rest first – the longer the evening went on, the more we leaned toward the latter.
I also kept calling the rental car company in Nashville, because I was worried that they would be closed when we arrived…they assured me that they would stay open 30 minutes past the arrival of the latest plane.
Here are the girls at our ‘iPad charging station,’ and the sea of people affected by weather delays in Phoenix that evening:

Our Jeep rental, jam packed with suitcases and sleepy girls:
We crept into my Dad & Holly’s house as quietly as we could, but they all heard us (Holly’s sister Penny was staying there as well) and came out to give us hugs before we went to sleep.
We were able to get about 4 or 5 hours of much-needed sleep, and spent a few hours visiting with Granddaddy, Bubbie, and Penny.
The silver lining to our change in destination city was getting to spend this bit of time with Holly – she had just had hip replacement surgery a few days beforehand, and she wasn’t going to be able to make the trip down to Georgia. We were really glad to have a chance to visit with her, and I know she was glad too.

Penny made us all a delicious breakfast of fruit, eggs, bacon, and grits (a real welcome to the south!) – it was the perfect relaxing morning after our travels.

My Dad left Holly in Penny’s capable hands, and we hit the road at about noon to get down to Georgia. Gary and Ella decided to join Granddaddy in his car, so I had the younger girls with me in our rental car. After a quick coffee stop at the Italian Market near St. Ann (where Gary used to teach, and where Ella was baptized), we hopped on the interstate.
A couple hours into the journey, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for lunch – another perfect welcome to the south :) We all enjoyed some delicious comfort food and outdoor giant checkers in iconic rocking chairs, then got back on the road (Katie decided to join the party in Granddaddy’s car, so it was just me and Emily in the rental).

We stopped at a gas station on our way out of the Cracker Barrel, and Gary hopped out of my Dad’s car and came over to help me with our car. I had to laugh and take a quick picture when the girls shouted over to us “why is Daddy getting our gas??” (they’re used to Oregon, where we stay in the car and gas station attendants take care of everything :))
There was one last coffee stop before driving up the mountain (we were tired people!) – here’s Granddaddy with his three girls:
We finally arrived at Tate just before dinnertime – here we are catching up with Helen, Clay, and Anne:

weary travelers sleeping in on Sunday morning:
The next few days were full of lots of swimming in the lake, reading and playing at home, making music, sharing delicious food, and spending great quality time with wonderful family. Rather than going through a daily ‘play by play,’ I’ll just say – enjoy this long series of pictures and videos :)
(most are my pictures, a few are my Dad’s, and the ones that are obviously from a good, non-phone camera are my from Dad’s cousin Semmes)

(there’s no such thing as “too many” pictures of kids eating watermelon, right? I hope not :))

My Uncle Doug and Aunt Libby arrived at Tate in time for dinner on Tuesday, so we had a few hours to visit with them before driving to Atlanta. We knew that we wanted to spend a day in Atlanta to get some more time with Anne & Clay (they’d left Tate before we did) and to visit Stride Ahead, the barn where Anne works. We’d originally thought we might head to Atlanta on Monday evening to give us two full days in Atlanta – perhaps try to visit the Georgia Aquarium or see some other Atlanta sights. But once our arrival was delayed, we decided to forget about the aquarium and spend some more time at Tate.
Our drive to Atlanta was pretty late at night, so the girls slept in on Wednesday, then woke up for a little breakfast at Anne & Clay’s house.

All of the girls – Katie especially – loved spending time with the dogs, Zoey and Raz:

After breakfast, we got dressed and drove over to Stride Ahead to meet Anne and Helen and visit with the horses.

Anne showed the girls how to ‘introduce themselves’ to the horses (letting them smell their hands) and let the girls help to lead one of the horses out to some open space to play.

Anne let the girls have a brief ride on Brubeck, one of her horses that she’s had for many years (incidentally, Brubeck is a descendant of Secretariat!). Ella and Katie got to help get Brubeck all ready, and selected helmets for their turn being led around the ring.

Emily said ‘thanks but no thanks’ to the riding, but she enjoyed watching and giving Brubeck a pat afterward:

The girls helped Anne to make a little ‘thank you and good job’ treat for Brubeck:

After the barn, we went to a local pizza place for some delicious (giant!) pieces of pizza for lunch:

Later that day, PaJoe and Embo came over to Anne & Clay’s, and the eight of us drove to a cute restaurant in Decatur where we met Helen for dinner.

little Emily getting goodbye kisses from the original Emily :)
This trip included the revival of a fun tradition that I remembered from my childhood visits to Tate – the Secret Government Flying Team. My Dad would tell bedtime stories to me and my cousins involving the adventures of the Secret Government Flying Team – he included lots of fun details and even did special voices – I remembered loving it so much, I asked if he would tell some stories to the girls. So he made up a SGFT adventure at Notre Dame Stadium while we were at Tate, and another one on Alcatraz for our last night in Atlanta – PaJoe and Embo enjoyed the final storytime too:

A couple of final pictures – me and Helen, and me with my Dad and grandparents:

On Thursday morning, we returned our rental car and the girls got to enjoy one last ride on the super fun train at the Atlanta airport:
The girls did really well on our travels home, which (thank goodness!) were completely on time and free of drama :) Here’s Emily enjoying some stickers on one of our flights:
and here we are waiting for Uncle Joe to pick us up back in Portland:
We had such an amazing time at Tate and in Atlanta – it’s hard to describe just how much it meant to watch my girls experience so many special things that I remember fondly from my own childhood, and to see how much that meant to my Dad and my grandparents as well.
So many thank yous are due to our wonderful family for their roles in making our trip successful…thank you to Joe and Kristin for the rides to and from the airport (sorry it was 4 trips instead of 2!), thank you to Granddaddy and Bubbie for letting us crash at your house for a few hours (and to Bubbie for ‘loaning’ her caretaker to us for a few days), thank you to Anne and Clay for hosting us in Atlanta, thank you to all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins who made time to see us while we were in Georgia, and last but most certainly not least, a huge thank you to PaJoe and Embo for their incredibly generous gift of making this trip possible! We are SO grateful, I know that our girls made wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.
Despite a less than ideal start to our trip, I’d say that our first vacation as a family of five was definitely a success!

The beach, bikes, and birthday celebrations – mid July
A big group of us headed to Cannon Beach on Friday, July 15th. It was a bit overcast, but not terribly windy – we all had a great time just enjoying the beautiful view and watching the kids play, so that’s how we spent most of our morning there. Here are a bunch of pictures of the seaside fun:

When we were ready for lunch, we came back to some benches to eat and then walked down the street for ice cream before our drive home.

The Beckley girls!
(chocolate ice cream: 1, Katie’s shirt: 0)
Gary had stayed back from the day trip to the coast to work on some projects at home. What I didn’t know was that his main project was a trip to Costco to prepare a lovely birthday dinner for me! We came home to some delicious grilled tri-tip and corn on the cob, and an amazing chocolate mousse cake for dessert. He also brought home those beautiful roses for me, and the wrapped gift at his feet turned out to be the red KitchenAid stand mixer that I’ve been coveting for years!!

It was such a wonderful birthday…I loved our morning at the beach, and it was such an incredible surprise to come home to Gary’s thoughtfully prepared birthday dinner – I’m a lucky girl!
The following day, Gary and Ella were able to join Joe, Kristin, Matt, and GiGi for an advance screening of Kubo and the Two Strings, Laika’s latest movie. They all loved the movie – I got to see it a few weeks later, and it’s just incredible! I always enjoy seeing Joe’s work in the Laika movies, but Kubo has definitely been my favorite so far. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet!

When the movie-goers got home, my Mom took me out for a birthday surprise from her – mani/pedis for us! It was such a treat to relax in the comfy chair and get pampered for a while :)

Here’s a video of Katie and Emily playing ‘swim lesson’:
Later that evening, the big group of us all met up at La Provence for dinner to celebrate my birthday (again! :))

GiGi loaned her sweater to Katie when she got chilly:

The following night, we all met up for dinner again since it was Matt’s last night in Portland. It wasn’t meant to be another birthday dinner for me, but when our server asked if we were celebrating anything, somebody must have told them it was my birthday – we got another free dessert and serenade!

They always love the chalkboard at Red Robin:
Uncle Matt’s annual picture with his six nieces and nephews:
On the 18th, I came home from a Fit4Mom instructor meeting to find Gary and GiGi out on the cul de sac across from our house with Ella and Katie on their bikes. We had just recently ordered a bigger bike (free of training wheels!) for Ella since she had outgrown her old one, but it’s the perfect size for Katie.

They both did so well on their new wheels! Ella still has to practice a bit to get comfortable with turning, but it was an awesome start!

Over the next couple days, the girls got their own mani/pedi at home to match Mommy’s, we met up with Maddy, Ryan and Michael for some playtime at the Murrayhill playground, and we packed for our upcoming trip to Georgia.

On the 21st, we left for our first trip as a family of five! Well, we tried to leave…it ended up being the following day. But that is its own story, so more on that later ;)

TBT: another one off to school
It’s officially September today, and we’re just a few days away from the first week of school – Katie will join big sis at Holy Trinity on Tuesday, as they begin pre-kindergarten and 1st grade, respectively, and Emily will start at Valley Christian Preschool next Friday.
Exactly two years ago today, I wrote this post about Ella starting full-time school, and what it meant to me as a ‘Mommy milestone.’ I suspected at the time that it felt like such a milestone because she was my first baby, but I know for sure now that it is just as momentous to send a little one off for full-time school the second time around.
Just as I did with Ella, I feel confident that Katie is ready for pre-k…perhaps even more so than Ella, because she’s so familiar with the school and the classroom, having watched Ella for the past two years. And just as I felt when Ella started pre-k, I’m excited for Katie because I know she’ll have so much fun and will thrive at school. And just as I was two years ago, I’m excited for the solo time with Emily, because she hasn’t gotten a whole lot of that.
But still, as next Tuesday approaches, it is really sinking in for me that Katie starting full-time school is a huge shift for both of us…she’s beginning that phase of life during which she’ll spend more of her waking hours away from me than with me. It is just as it should be, and we’re both ready for it, but it still makes me a little bit sad.
So, to fulfill the ‘throwback’ purpose of this post, here are a few pictures from that morning two years ago, when Katie was starting at Valley Christian, and Ella was off to pre-k…and Emily was a little 7-month-old just along for the ride :)

Katie is definitely her own person, and she will have her own pre-k experience…but I love knowing that she has Ella’s example to guide her. They’ve already planned their matching outfits for the first day of school, and I have no doubt that Katie will be looking at Ella just like this:

2nd week of July
The 2nd week of July began with Uncle Matt’s arrival on Friday, July 8th – the girls and I picked him up at the airport, then went to Joe & Kristin’s house for some lunch with GiGi, Maddy, Ryan & Michael. Here’s the super uncle, reunited at last with all of his nieces and nephews:

Here are some pictures and videos from Emily’s swim lesson on July 9th:

Here’s a video of the big girls’ swim lessons during their ‘playtime’ at the end:

After the swim lesson on the 9th, we met up with Joe & Kristin’s family that evening at Fuddruckers:

Here are some ‘playing at home’ pictures, including when the girls helped Daddy open his new table saw!

Decorating cupcakes with GiGi:
Matt, GiGi, and I took the girls to mass at St. Cecilia’s in Beaverton one Sunday morning. They did pretty well, minus a little need-to-go-outside tantrum from Emily toward the end…but they all enjoyed playing on the playground for a bit after church.

Ella and Katie attended Vacation Bible School at Our Redeemer from July 10th through the 14th. Since we just dropped them off and picked them up each evening, I don’t have many pictures…but Gary did get this one of Katie when he dropped her off one evening:

Gary, Matt, GiGi, and Grammy took the big girls to see Finding Dory one afternoon, and Emily and I met them for some dinner afterward:

We decided kind of last minute to spend the morning at OMSI on July 12th – Matt mentioned that he hadn’t ever been there, and it was the perfect way to take advantage of our membership one last time before it expired at the end of the month. The girls loved exploring all of the exhibits as usual, especially the “Journey to Space” exhibition that had opened a few weeks prior.

On Wednesday the 13th, we had everybody over to our house for dinner:

On Thursday the 14th, Matt and I went on our 2nd annual Brother-in-Law/Sister-in-Law wine tasting afternoon – this time, we checked out Blakeslee Vineyard Estates and Ponzi Vineyards in Sherwood. Both were gorgeous, but we especially loved sitting on the patio at Blakeslee, enjoying our glass of pinot and a spectacular Mt. Hood view:

The following day included a fun beach trip and the beginning of several birthday celebrations (lucky me! ;)), so more to come soon!

Fireworks and family fun – 1st week of July
During the first week of July, we continued to enjoy our Ohio visitors, celebrated our sweet niece’s 4th birthday, hosted a July 4th BBQ, and had some more swim lessons. But first, Ella’s last day of Safety Town (and ST graduation) was on Friday, July 1st – here she is posing like Tommy the Traffic Light on her way in (why two pairs of sunglasses, I have no idea):

The organizers put together a cute slideshow that was shown during the graduation ceremony – they shared it in the facebook group afterward, so I was able to save these pictures of Ella and her group:

Grandpa came with us to the graduation ceremony – here’s our crew waiting for the festivities to begin:

After one more goodbye to Tommy, we headed outside to let the girls play for a bit.

While they were playing on this U.S. map, I thought it would be fun to have the girls stand on their birth cities…Emily was not having it, so Ella graciously offered to switch with her and skipped on over to Oregon while Emily was on Tennessee territory:
After that, we went to Baja Fresh (graduate’s choice) for some celebratory lunch:

Later that day, Ella & Katie had their second swim lessons of the summer:

On Saturday the 2nd, it was Emily’s turn for a second swim lesson – this time, she asked that Daddy join her in the pool:

Also during early July, in preparation for sharing a room (Daddy’s working on bunk beds for them!), we moved Katie’s bed into Ella’s room – it’s not an ideal set-up (Katie’s bed blocks two of the storage drawers in Ella’s bed, making them basically useless for now), but they’re having fun sleeping in the same room :)

I loved capturing this sweet sister snuggle-fest…they probably fought about 25 different things within just a few minutes of this, but it was a super sweet moment :)

Sunday, July 3rd was Madelyn’s 4th birthday! We had two opportunities to celebrate – first a party at Pump It Up Jr in the morning, then a delicious spaghetti dinner at Joe & Kristin’s house that evening, followed by some at-home fireworks!
enjoying the toys and silly mirrors before the party:
Emily was hesitant about trying most of the equipment at Pump It Up, but Daddy convinced her to go down the slide with him a couple times:

The girls all got to take home a balloon – Emily kept hers very close in the car:
After Emily’s nap, we headed to Joe & Kristin’s for Maddy’s birthday dinner.

Kristin’s niece Emma took these cute pictures of Ella and Katie watching the fireworks:

The following day was, of course, July 4th – we hosted a BBQ at our house for the whole family, so Gary got to give our new grill a test run. Dinner turned out great -we had some tasty burgers, hot dogs, and corn on the cob from the grill, plus some green salad, baked beans, quinoa salad, fruit salad, and some red white & blue desserts.

obligatory picture of our patriotic desserts – chocolate m&m cookies and flag-tastic strawberry shortcake:

Once it was dark outside, we headed out to the porch to look for fireworks – we were able to see quite a few, and heard even more than we saw! Katie did not care for my bright flash :)

Here’s a look at the finished storage bench that Gary made for our guest room window nook – it turned out so well, it fits perfectly and will be such a useful storage solution in there:
Here’s Emily singing “For the First Time in Forever” from Frozen – kind of a mix of the original version and the ‘reprise’ – can you tell we listened to that soundtrack in the car pretty frequently this summer? ;)
[for those not as intimately familiar with the song, here are the lyrics that she’s singing (it’s sort of a mix of song and dialogue): “Arendelle’s in deep, deep, deep, deep snow / what?! / you kind of set off an eternal winter…everywhere / everywhere?! / but that’s okay, you can just unfreeze it / I can’t! / sure you can, I know you can! ‘Cause for the first time in forever…we can head down this mountain together, you don’t have to live in fear, ’cause for the first time in forever, for the first time in forever, nothing’s in my way! Ooh! (that’s where Anna bumps into Prince Hans at the end of her song)]
Here’s the biggest sis singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” inspired by her head covering:

We all soaked up our last few days with Grandpa before he had to leave – he went home to Ohio on July 6th because Joanie & Dave were headed to Ohio for an extended visit there.

Just after Grandpa left, Uncle Matt arrived for his visit – more on that coming soon!

Visitors, swimming, and the best Father’s Day ever – late June
On Sunday, June 19th, the Cleveland Cavaliers gave Gary (and Cleveland sports fan dads everywhere) an amazing Father’s Day gift – they pulled off an historic comeback win over the Golden State Warriors, and won the NBA Championship!
but first, Gary’s Father’s Day started out like this:

A bit later in the morning, we all enjoyed some maple bacon french toast with fruit salad and bacon:
and a little while later, the girls helped Daddy open his gifts – a couple new polo shirts, some heat-resistant gloves for the grill, and some spicy stout mustard.

Here are some pictures of Daddy and his girls before, during, and immediately following the incredible Cavs game:

watching the post-game festivities:
The significance of this NBA Finals win for the Cavaliers would be hard to exaggerate – not only the city of Cleveland’s first championship since 1964, not only the Cavaliers’ first championship in franchise history, not only the first team to win game 7 on the road since 1978, not only the first time in NBA history that a team came back to win the series after being down 1-3…but also such a thrilling game! After the series went back and forth between the Cavs and the Warriors, with both teams enjoying HUGE double digit victories, game 7 was a total nail-biter…it wasn’t clear until the final minute who was going to win that game. But the Cavaliers did!! Yay for Gary and Cavs fans everywhere :)
After the girls went to bed, I ran out to grab us some burgers and fries for dinner – here’s the happy Daddy with his dinner, in yet another Cavs shirt of course:
The following Tuesday, June 21st, was Ella’s first day of Tigard Safety Town at Mary Woodward Elementary. This was her second time attending Safety Town, so we thought twice about signing her up for it again…but she was enthusiastic about going back, and we figured it couldn’t hurt to reinforce all of the safety lessons taught during the two weeks.
She wore last year’s Safety Town shirt to her first day, and greeted Tommy the Traffic Light with a great big hug:
Little sisters watching the opening presentation:
After being matched up with her group and counselor, Ella put on this year’s Safety Town shirt and was ready for action:
The Safety Town organizers are great at posting pictures and videos to the private facebook page each day, so that we parents can see what the kids are up to. Here are a couple pics of Ella’s group during animal safety day and personal safety day:

All three girls loved the opportunity to play on Mary Woodward’s playground while we were there for Safety Town:

Grandpa arrived in Portland on June 20th, and started out staying at Joe & Kristin’s house; GiGi arrived late in the evening on the 22nd, and started out at our house. The girls were asleep when she got to our house, so they waited patiently for her to come out the following morning :)

On Thursday the 23rd, Grandpa and Madelyn came over to hang out with us for the afternoon – but first, they got to accompany us to Katie’s final Fairy Ballet class. Since the fairy ballerinas had already done a wonderful job at their recital, the final class was just a chance to play and have fun – Teacher Valerie used all sorts of props like teddy bears, teacups, and pretend picnic foods. Grammy met us there too, so Katie definitely had the biggest audience of all the ballerinas :)

Friday, June 24th was the ‘kid’s class’ after Stroller Strides – SS instructor Merrilee’s daughter Mariah had been wanting to plan a workout for the kids, and she finally got her wish! Mariah planned all of her favorite exercises, and the other kids all brought their play strollers and grocery carts – it was adorable, as you might imagine :)

Later that evening, we went to Joe & Kristin’s for a BBQ. I had to leave before dinner to get Ella & Katie to their first summer swim lesson, but I did get one picture before we left:

Here are my two big girls, ready for Water Safety 3 (Katie) and Stroke 1 (Ella):

The following day was Emily’s first summer swim lesson. It was actually her very first swim lesson ever, so Daddy took plenty of pictures and videos:

She did really well! Definitely a bit hesitant about putting her face in the water, but super brave overall. We celebrated with some lunch at Panera:

Later that day, we met up with Grandpa, Joe, Madelyn, Ryan & Michael at the Murrayhill playground for a bit, then grabbed some dinner at Pizzicato:

Here are a few pictures of Gary’s latest project, a storage bench for the window nook in the guest room – he stained the top a dark brown and it looks great! I’m planning to use it to store some files, pictures, and scrap-booking supplies.

For the last few days of June, Erin and Camille came down from Seattle for a visit. It’s so nice to have them so close now! Camille is a couple months younger than Emily, but just as verbal and full of personality, so they had great fun playing together :) Camille also loved playing with the big girls – all four of them were super sweet together.

Our June Stroller Strides class at the zoo happened to fall during Erin’s visit, so we had a fun morning checking out the animals after class:

Before Erin & Camille drove home on the 30th, we enjoyed one more outing to the park after dropping Ella at Safety Town.

When we figured out that Emily and Camille have now met up for visits 3 summers in a row, I couldn’t resist creating this little collage of them in 2014, 2015, and 2016:

Thank you to Erin and Camille for making the trip down to spend time with us – we can’t wait to see your neck of the woods sometime soon!
A once-in-a-lifetime championship win for Gary’s hometown, Father’s Day, visitors from multiple states, a trip to the zoo, first swim lessons and Safety Town – hard to believe that it all happened in about 10 days! :)

TBT: Our final wedding before the wedding
Today is the 9th anniversary of Jocelyn & Kevin’s wedding – the last wedding that Gary & I attended before our own. It was such a gorgeous wedding, and a super fun weekend for us – our first (and only, so far) visit to Notre Dame’s campus together. While I’d been to Notre Dame a couple of times during college to visit Jocelyn, and Gary had of course spent two summers there as part of his ACE program in 2003 and 2004 (Jocelyn’s ACE summers were 2005 and 2006 – they just missed each other :)) – we’ve only been there together for the Popit nuptials.
We stayed at The Morris Inn on campus for the full Notre Dame experience – too bad it was too early in August for a football game :) Jocelyn and Kevin’s ceremony took place at the campus’s gorgeous Basilica of the Sacred Heart in the morning – here’s my handsome fiance (I actually had to delete the word ‘husband’ just now, and remind myself that he wasn’t yet my husband at the time) walking to the wedding ceremony:
and the radiant bride and groom taking pictures after the ceremony:
There was some time to kill between the morning ceremony and the evening reception, so Gary and I changed and spent some time walking around campus – checking out buildings that were open to self-guided tours, the Grotto, recognizable sights from the movie ‘Rudy’…and of course, Touchdown Jesus:
Later that evening, we put on different fancy clothes and headed to a local country club for the wedding reception (note the ND tie):

Thank you to Jocelyn and Kevin for including us in your special day – happy anniversary to one of the sweetest couples we know!

Early June
Here’s some more of what the girls were up to during the first half of June.
They got to enjoy the warm (in one case, HOT) weather at a couple of outdoor birthday parties… bubbles + water + birthday treats = happy girls!

Ella snuggled up with Benjamin Bunny during our last visit with him before school ended:
We joined the Sparkses at Conestoga Rec Center’s splash pad one day after school – it was really fun, the girls loved it!

I put together this little collage of each of the girls wearing this cute swimsuit – it sure has gotten some mileage, these pictures were taken in Virginia, Georgia, and Oregon!
Enjoying the sandbox at Vista Brook Park:
My little Stroller Strides helpers love to practice their exercises before and after class – it cracks me up, Katie will choose burpees and pushups over playing on the playground, despite my encouragement to “just go play!” :)

Emily chatting with some friends after class:

The sweet ‘little’ sisters got some extra time together once Katie was all finished with school for the year:

Here’s Ella all ready for field day at school:
and in case you’re wondering whether Dr. Beckley got to participate in Field Day, he did :)
Here’s Katie showing me her 4 and half fingers on 6/16/16, when she turned 4 1/2!
Daddy and Emily reading together:
Family movie night – The Good Dinosaur:
Here are a couple of interesting places where Katie has fallen asleep lately:

So that gets us through the first half of June, close to the momentous Father’s Day gift that Gary (and all Cleveland sports fan dads) enjoyed on June 19th…but more on that later :)

Fairy ballerina times four
As I’ve mentioned occasionally over the past few months, Katie has been taking a Fairy Ballet class on Thursdays at Encore, where Ella took ballet a couple of years ago. Thursday, June 9th was their last class at Encore before their recital, and they got to try on their costumes for the first time! Teacher Valerie called us parents into the room to help the girls into their costumes and watch one final run through before the next week’s dress rehearsal.

On Saturday, June 11th, it was time for recital pictures – Katie’s second opportunity to wear her adorable costume, complete with full hair and make-up.

We weren’t allowed to take pictures in the room where the professional pictures were being taken, but I’m told we’ll get a link to check those out online any day now.
On Thursday, June 16th, their ballet class was held at the recital venue, The Venetian Theatre in Hillsboro. You guessed it – full costume, hair and make-up once again for the dress rehearsal :)

Here are videos of the fairy ballerinas’ run throughs at the dress rehearsal – their first time on the big stage! There were a couple of ‘false starts’ because the girls got a bit turned around…they were so used to seeing themselves in the big mirror at Encore, they weren’t sure which direction to scamper off to! They figured it out, though – Katie even powered through this first time when her flower clip fell out of her hair toward the beginning…she just replaced it and kept right on dancing :)
Saturday, June 18th was – at long last – recital day! Katie’s fourth and final opportunity to wear her beautiful sparkly costume. While Daddy, Ella, Emily, and Grammy held our spot in line, I brought Katie up to the ‘holding room’ for performers and helped her get changed. Here she is getting her face painted by one of the class moms, who was nice enough to decorate all of the fairy ballerinas’ faces:

We sat in the very back row, so my video isn’t great…but the upside is that I was able to stand up to take the video, since there was nobody behind us:
Here’s Katie receiving her recital trophy after the show:
Both Daddy and Grammy had brought some beautiful flowers for our little fairy ballerina, so Ella presented her with those after the show.

Here’s Ella with her friend Hadley, who did a tap dance during the same recital:

After the recital, we walked back to our car and went out for a celebratory dinner at Thirsty Lion.

Congratulations to our sweet Katie bug and all of the other fairy ballerinas! We’re so proud of our second little ballerina to dance at an Encore recital – Emily starts a summer ballet/tap class there in a few weeks, so we’ll see if Recital 2018 is in the cards ;)

Wrapping up kindergarten
Before wrapping up for the school year, Ella had a few final school events as a kindergartener at Holy Trinity.
First up was the Spring Concert, on June 7th. Ella’s class was told to dress with flower/garden/springtime accents, so we worked as many flowers as possible into her ensemble and accessories :)

Here’s a video of Ella’s class singing their song, “Inch By Inch” – accompanied by Dr. Beckley!

Ella getting a ‘job well done’ smooch from Daddy:

Gratefully digging in to her sandwich – I made her wait until after her performance to eat the dinner that I’d brought for her, for fear of making a mess on her dress :)
Sparks and Beckley sisters after the show:
A few days later, Daddy and Ella headed to the Father/Daughter Dance together on June 11th. It was a Hawaiian theme, so we dug up a couple of leis from the dress-up bin for them :) They had dinner at Red Robin first, then went to Holy Trinity to dance the night away with all the other HT Daddies and daughters.

The following week, Ella had her last day of kindergarten on Friday, June 17th. We took a few pictures at home before she and Daddy left for school – first up, the ‘first day/last day’ comparison…amazing how much she’s grown!

Ella had a half day for her last day of kindergarten, so Katie, Emily and I picked her up at noon. We also picked up Ava, who came over to play for a while before meeting up with the rest of the Sparks crew that evening. Here we are before our drive home – if Ella’s smile looks strained, it’s because she had been shedding a few tears about saying goodbye to her teacher and friends at school:
The girls were all smiles as they played that afternoon though, and of course when we all met up for ‘last day of school ice cream’ at Menchie’s!

Ella had such a great year of kindergarten – she can’t wait to have Katie at Holy Trinity with her in September!
